I talked to Sayaka last night. She is busy with her Chinese language studies at ICLP. Last night her homework was to write two essays. The topics she chose I think well represents her uniquely balanced personality, which mixes an interest in security policy with one of the world’s more deeply philosophical cartoon characters. One of her essays was on Nuclear Weapons, the other on Doraemon.

I saw the weirdest Japanese film last night. Battle Royale. I only managed 20 minutes. Do you know anything about it?
Watching Doraemon dubbed in Chinese was one of my most important learning strategies. I happened to have a 5th grader watching it with me most of the time and she would provide an additional running commentary/explanation of the show.
Kerim – hilarious. Sayaka now watches Doraemon in Chinese in Taiwan. My friend Lars (http://www.larseny.com) is translating Doraemon as a part time job from Japanese to English.
Claire – Battle Royale is a famous movie in Japan and there is a more spectacular sequel. It is fascinating in many ways but some are simply disgusted by it. I thought it was interesting. It is really one of a genre of similar movies/books/stories that we have plenty of in the West, but with a little bit of extra Japanese twist…
