Here are a few links from the last few days.
- My sister Carleen has an interesting post on Leonardo da Vinci’s bridge to link Europe and Asia and a Norwegian bridge of the same design.
- An interesting article on the linguist who did the ancient languages for the new movie on the Passion. If you read the article, can you tell me what is so funny about the pluperfect subjunctive?
- To see just how weird the net can get, check out BadgerBadger (linked removed, suspect malware). On a similar note, check out the Japanese Navy’s new TV recruitment commercial which is all over the net.
- Oooh, 7 Ramen shops in period setting in Ikebukuro. Read JeanSnow’s article on it and an article in the Metropolis. Location: Hikaricho Ramen Meisakuza is located at 1-14 Higashi-Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku. Open daily 11am-4am. Nearest stn: Ikebukuro. She also links to this insane clip from a Japanese arcade.
- Fascinating documentary and web site Fog of War – I reallly want to see this…See the trailer here.
- Old but useful (or fun) links friends have told me about in the past few months: Japanese Occupation Pictures, the Imperial War Museum site, US National Archives, Site on US-Japan relations, a site dedicated to classical martial arts in Japan, Japanese news in Taiwan, Two great sites on mistakes made in writing, fantastic blog of historians that I read regularly now, the homepage for the Americans United for Separation of Church and State which does some important work, and the great collection of articles at Japan Focus.
I think he was just proud because the pluperfect subjunctive is one of those EXTREME cases that you don’t get much chance to practice reading or writing and hence which are hard to learn, or even conceptualise at first.
Thanks Matt! I was wondering about that.
Incidentally Matt, your “Your arms are too short to box with God” posting is absolutely fantastic:

Matt, I’m delighted that you like Cliopatria. Visit us often. You’re good company.
OK, I *have* to say something about that maritime self-defense force commercial. Are the TRYING to reinforce the stereotype that the SDF has? Do they just not care? Or are they oblivious to the fact?
Of course the US navy has the same stereotype, otherwise the Village People would have one less song.
