I love the smurfs. I always have. My sister and I were raised on Smurf songs and the cartoons. Never, never did I (and I doubt Carleen did either) turn the analytical eye on the holy smurfs. Others have, though. Now, after all these years, do I realize where my deep socialistic instincts find their source. I must overcome these urges towards an egalitarian society born of the propoganda of my youth and the seeming tranquility of Norwegian welfare society and embrace the invisible hand! 資本主義萬歲! :-)

How fascinating! I had heard about some of this stuff before but I wasn’t aware of how deep it goes.
I remember the smurfs with much fondness, especially that one video we got from Karen Ann, where they have this magic flute that makes people dance until they fall asleep. It was just such a bizarre story.

Makes me wanna take another look at the smurfs, though. I for one tend to lean towards social liberalism in all aspects of politics.
Ah, the Smurfs. I guess I never thought of them as a socialist society, although I did notice that they did have pretty good division of labor, although Handy Smurf and Papa Smurf were the only ones that ever did anything useful. (That opinion probably shows I was destined to be an engineer, even early in life)
I never thought about it too much at that age, since I was prepubescent and didn’t have much curiosity about sex, but I always thought it was really wierd that there was only one girl smurf, and even she didn’t show up until part way through the series. But it was a children’s show, so I suppose I shouldn’t read too much into that.
Interesting, ya, some of the gender issue sites point out the bizarre case of the girl smurf and her single role in the cartoon of “being a girl” or standing around looking pretty (like it is “brainy smurf”‘s single goal of being smart, etc.
why is there only one girl and not more but yet there is always more baby boy smurfs?

ive just read an essay about smurfs that tyhey were a utopic nazi village..i got shocked actually and learnt that peyo was a member of nazi (Klux Klux Klan) something like that… that was really disturbing..
It’s interesting how the Tellitubbies were criticised for Tinky Winky’s feminine behaviour but Smurfs were lucky to have gotten away with Vanity Smurf. I guess children really are innocent (back then anyway.. I know I wasn’t prepared to question anything when I was 6 and watchinng the Smurfs)
