But now I’m getting suspicious that this is just a conspiracy amongst the cabbies of Jinan to mess with our heads. I was living there 5 years back, and when I mentioned that my destination restaurant served Korean food, the driver asked me the same question as you were asked. I also had a girl who sells neckties on the train ask if I was Filipino (without me making any mention of the Philippines!).

By: Derek /blog/2008/03/are-you-korean/comment-page-1/#comment-101915 Wed, 12 Mar 2008 21:15:52 +0000 http://muninn.net/blog/2008/03/are-you-korean.html#comment-101915 I hope that eventually this may become so, but from what I have observed it seems like Japan is much like western Europe in this regard: they recognize the need for foreign workers because of their shrinking population, but are only willing to ‘enfranchise’ them when they’ve been there for a couple of generations and speak, act, and think like a native. Even then it’s not given, considering that even multiple-generation zainichi have go through the same citizenship requirements that an immigrant does. I was absolutely flabbergasted when I realized that there are countries where being born there doesn’t automatically make you a citizen of that country.
