I’ll have to forward the billboard idea as it is absolutely genious!
What a comical conversation you listened to! I would never have been able to doze off!
I remember being directly asked about my ‘fatness’ (I’m not THAT bad) in Korea and it took some getting used to. It’s an interesting thing that when we’re upon foreigners we actually say such things! I’m sure I’m guilty of it myself. I think it has more to do with the fact that we’re fairly certain we’re never going to meet the individual again, so why not get an answer to all our curious notions, no matter how rude it is to ask!

People were always asking me why I was so tall, why my nose was so big, etc. I was quite embarassed until I got used to it.

I think most cultures have a somewhat of a double-standard on tact: for some reason people will ask questions or make comments to a foreigner that that would be considered quite rude to a fellow countryman.

The reasons for laughing are to many to write down now, but mainly I find the three sentiments very catchy in an advertisment like way. In fact I think billboards should be posted on all major Nordic airports: Welcome to the north – where no question is too direct, no physical feature spared comment, and no gender inequality goes unpunished.
The questionable truthfulness of these words is greatly outweighed by their shock value.

I should also say, as a now long time reader of your posts both here and on froginawell.net: keep up the great work and good luck on your Phd!
