Congratulations, Mitch! Doesn’t it feel great to have that weight off your chest? I know how relieved I felt after my advisor told me I had passed all 3 of my PhD quals (albeit one of them just barely). I did have the advange of my quals being 3 3-hour tests rather then an oral battering, but that just means a whole week of test-taking stress. Kind of like finals week on steriods.

So does that mean you are now an official PhD candidate, or is there some kind of preliminary that you need to do later?

Jonathan: my advisor was Ann Blair and she was wonderful both in helping us prepare and during the exam.

Nomadism: Thanks! I’ll be arriving in Seoul on the 31st and I’ll call you as soon as I’m moved in an settled. Sayaka and I settled on the apartment complex I told you about in an email (probably a bit more expensive and distant but convenient for us to have a place set up before we go).

Congratulations!

Emotionally, I felt that the generals were very similar to my Bar Mitzvah: I was entering something like adulthood after intensive, but not entirely relevant, study; the experience itself was terrifying and my audience very kind; people really do treat you differently after.

Who was your Early Modern Intellectual advisor? I did a field with Fleming….

You should have mentioned that when your examiners came out, they all remarked on what a good exam it was and how interesting it was, and how they wished they had had more time! All compliments to your lack of epistemological nudity. :)
